During the week of November 18, students at Gravely Elementary School held a food drive to support Crossroads Connection. Each grade was challenged to collect one of six different food items for one week. The grades competed against each other with the winner receiving extra recess. After the food drive, the student council and their families gathered to write notes of encouragement to those receiving the food and count and pack bags of food. The result was an incredible donation of 6,500 food items and over 500 bags of food packed. This set a record for Crossroads food drives!

With a sense of responsibility and kindness, they gathered non-perishable items, organizing a drive that not only provided nourishment but also brought hope to those in need. Their selfless act of charity demonstrated a deep understanding of empathy and a commitment to helping others, showing that even small gestures can make a significant difference in the lives of those who are less fortunate. Through their actions, these students exemplified the true spirit of community and kindness.

Students’ food donations reflect a strong sense of community and selflessness, qualities that are deeply resonant with the spirit of the school’s namesake, Retired Admiral Samuel L. Gravely. Known for his trailblazing service as the first African American to command a U.S. Navy ship, as well as his dedication to duty and leadership. Admiral Gravely’s legacy embodies the values of service to others and making a meaningful impact on society.
